I tend to think that the main concern, sadly, is the increasing demographic weight of the Islamic world coupled with the appointment of a selected ally to send a very mixed message. It was the same mindset that lead to China, for which justice and human rights were an afterthought in the 1940's (and may still very well be) to be placed placed among the UN 'top 5.'

The UN has become a parody of itself, I'm afraid. This seems to me like political trickery with no hint of sincere justice to it. More like a sign of a desire for influence over particular nations to prove more friendly where some key powers wishes it mattered. Iran is no paradise for women, but compared to Saudi Arabia, women have it better there, and Iran has shown a lot more in terms of progress in recent years for women's rights than Saudi Arabia even hinted at.

No, the UN, even as an image thing, played it all wrong - A much more powerful message could have been sent here by selecting Iran instead (despite its major flaws), in my view - By saying "Even the 'axis of evil' Iran treats women better than our allies... so get to work." UN, I reckon, now stands for Ultimate Nincompoops.
