As long as He, God the father, the son and the holy spirit, was at the top of your list. All other gods came second.
Technically speaking, the son and holy spirit hadn't been invented yet. smiley: smile
What are your thoughts on this?
I think it reflects the fact that the original religion was polytheistic.  The Hebrews were actually Canaanites who lived in the hill country rather than in the coastal cities (i.e., there was no captivity in Egypt, Exodus, or conquest of Canaan as described in the OT).  IIRC the tablets from Ugarit include a Baal Yahweh who was son of the great god of the pantheon.  Baal Yahweh had a consort named Asherah (the name survived in the OT as a name for places where people worshipped false gods).  At a guess, this commandment reflects an initial push to henotheism, on the way to monotheism.  IIRC Akenaten followed that course - first Aten was just the most important of the gods; later he tried to put the other gods out of business.
