I doubt that.  He is too extreme.  He wants to cut, and eventually end,  Social Security and Medicare and that will scare off a lot of older voters, most of which are Republican.  They need to find someone right of center.  Too far right or too extreme will scare voters off.  Americans are tired of the extreme, whether it's too far right, too far left, too religious, or too anti big government.

People like to talk about cutting the size of government and cutting social programs ( spurred on by Fox News and Rush Limbaugh), but when they need those social programs, they are glad to have them as something to fall back on. And that means big government.  Sure, it would be great to pay minimal taxes and still have all the social programs that make their lives better, but it's unrealistic.  Rand Paul's ideas sound good, but people know they would end up hurting the majority of Americans in the long run.  Nominating Paul would be a sure win for Obama.  Really, unless they come up with someone who has been out of the main stream public eye, and is a moderate, I just don't see anyone they have who would fit the bill.

The future will tell. I see Americans 'protest voting' in recent years, so they tend to vote against someone, not for someone. Coupled with a moderate VP candidate, and he is a good talker, I think the younger Paul is a threat. It's like this country here - Stephen Harper is no good, but as long as the Liberal party does not get its act together, it will be punished in elections.
