Last year I read a great book by AJ Jacobs named 'The Year of Living Biblically', in which he embarks on a quest to follow each every tiny rule of the Bible in its literal sense. He basically educates himself on nearly every living religion across the globe, studying their intricacies to find the true interpretation of the Bible.
He of course extends his magnifying glass upon the infamous Ten Commandments. He brings up an interesting perspective for one of them in particular, God's instruction to not worship any gods before Him. He emphasizes its wording: no gods before Him. Certain religious sects have perceived this to mean that God didn't care who you worshipped, Buddha, Baal, whoever. As long as He, God the father, the son and the holy spirit, was at the top of your list. All other gods came second.
